Ex- Federal Bureau of Investigation director James Comey has denied the charges to making false statements to lawmakers and impeding a congressional proceeding.

The former director's lawyer filed the plea acting as his counsel in a federal court in Alexandria, Virginia on Wednesday morning.

The defense lawyer stated he would seek to have the proceedings dismissed for several reasons including that his defendant, a opponent of Donald Trump, was being targeted.

James Comey was formally accused soon after Donald Trump pushed his attorney general to take action against him.

Court Developments

During the hearing on Wednesday, the defense counsel the legal representative told the magistrate they planned to file several motions to terminate the legal matter before a trial, stating the prosecution was vindictive and that a government lawyer was unlawfully designated to handle the case.

James Comey's proceedings was initially managed by Erik Siebert, who stepped down under pressure from Trump after his investigation into a different political adversary - NY AG Letitia James - failed to bring criminal charges.

Mr Comey came across in positive mood as he came into the legal venue on mid-week, conversing with his legal team and making jokes. He was supported by his wife, Mrs Failor and daughter Maureen Comey, a federal prosecutor who the previous administration terminated.

Upon hearing to the judge recite his constitutional guarantees and the pair of allegations against him in legal proceedings on mid-week, James Comey was asked if he understood the accusations.

Historical Information

James Comey was the FBI Director from 2013-2017 and was terminated about four months into Trump's initial presidency as national leader. At the time, Mr Comey was leading an probe into Russian election interference and whether there were any connections between Moscow and the election effort.

During his tenure, James Comey triggered a negative reaction from the Democratic party when he announced just days before the 2016 presidential election that he was investigating presidential nominee the candidate's use of a private email server. Charges against Hillary Clinton were never brought, leading to disapproval from Republicans as well.

Current Allegations

Government attorneys claim James Comey lied to the legislature during a legislative proceeding in September 2020 when he was being examined about both the previous examination as well as the foreign influence inquiry. They say he provided false information to the legislative body by claiming he had not authorized an individual at the FBI to release to journalistic entities details about the agency probes.

Legal representatives also allege the defendant of "wrongfully trying to affect, block and slow" the panel by making false statements to it.

Through a recording Mr Comey posted to his online platform after he was accused, he declared he was innocent and accused Donald Trump of behaving like a "autocrat".

"Our household have been aware for years that there are ramifications to standing up to the former president," he commented. "We refuse to live on our kneeling."

"I am not guilty," he added. "So let's have a court case."

These allegations against James Comey came after the former president shared on online platforms insisting on his attorney general, Ms Bondi, prosecute the former director and additional individuals.
